"A 'WHO-LA'?!"

       You may be wondering, "What is a Doula?". Well, the word 'Doula' is Greek and means "woman's servant". A labor Doula provides continuous physical and emotional support during labor and birth to both the laboring mother and her partner. The doula's deep and encompassing trust in the birth process and her objectivity helps keep both parents balanced during this emotional time. A Doula stays by the side of the mother continuously and acts as a liaison between the laboring woman, her partner, and the rest of the health care team. A Doula does NOT replace the woman's partner or her primary care-giver. A Doula does NOT give any clinical assesment of the mother or baby (such as monitor fetal heart tones or do vaginal exams).
